Ever since I discovered that trying to model erosion using computers back in 1970 was far more interesting and engaging than trying to measure it and then make inferences from those measurements – I have been totally immersed in using technology.
So it’s natural that this blog should have a page dedicated to it as a placeholder for the various streams or themes that have grabbed my working life and which has continued into my retirement.
In alphabetical order, but top of the list which probably is only fair given the degree of attention, pleasure and excitement that this technology ecosystem has given me and the family is Apple. This category details my celebrations, trials and tribulations and discoveries by using a lot of Apple’s technologies and software.
Next, and again quite appropriate given the attention this technology now demands, and the interest, concerns and excitement it generates is Artificial Intelligence. Lots of varied and thought provoking posts in this category I feel.
Coming third in the list is Google. Where we would we be without them. The Marmite of Technology – love them, or hate them, you can’t ignore them and the advances, innovations and just neat software they’ve produced and not satisfied with that they turned their attention to producing hardware to give Apple a run for their money, but I was not to be diverted from the true path!
Then there’s a catch-all – Hardware – which has a number of posts which could be of interest. Not much else to say, the clue is in the name!
A growing interest has been Home Technology as Smart has invaded the house and a lot of the things we do, and will continue to do in the future.
linux is a strange one. You could possibly categorise this as “something I wish I’d had more time to invest in getting to know ow and use”. But, I have built Ubuntu servers, installed LAMP platforms and generally played around with it, and maybe I will eventually get Home Assistant (see above) working on a Raspberry Pi.
So to Networks. This category covers a wide range of topics ranging from home networks, routers and other devices to more widely spread interests in the Internet.
Privacy and Security are the next two. Topics that are of paramount interest and cover many issues of importance to us all.
I was labelled the Social Media Evangelist by INSRV whilst an IT Director responsible for Enablement and Strategy, and I have continued my interest in this area of technology ever since then, Sometimes annoying, always likely to spark controversy, now more ant-social than the social network it was supposed to encourage.
Then there’s Windows. ‘Nuff sed. I had to use it once, I don’t use it now, so there won’t be too much up-to-date detail in this category.
Lastly there’s Software – the partner of Hardware. A catch-all for everything that runs on a device and can’t be fitted into another category.
